Educators

Principals, Counselors and Teachers – Welcome!

All of us here at Let’s Get Global believe that education across borders is crucial to building tomorrow’s leaders. The health of our country depends upon a globally educated population and our mission is to encourage and assist young adults in the U.S. to have international experiences, especially during the year between high school graduation and the next phase of their lives. As educators, you are key to introducing the idea to students and their parents.

We’re not a program. We’re a project of U. S. Servas, a non-profit that has been bringing people together for sixty years. Together, we are working to make the Gap Year a cultural norm in the United States.

We’re planning to launch a massive PR campaign in the media, on the social networks, and through local events, talks and contests.  We are building a volunteer corps across the country to work with principals, counselors, teachers, parents, and students.  We also plan to research and provide advice on funding so that an intercultural experience will be available across all segments of the population.

As you know, more than 30% of college students drop out; many because they just aren’t ready to handle the academic and social pressures. Taking a Gap Year builds confidence, broadens outlook, encourages focus, and teaches flexibility, tolerance and respect. And imagine the stories you will hear when students come back for a visit!

LGG is encouraging high school students to apply to colleges during their senior year while they still have your support and guidance. Once accepted, we suggest they request a deferral. Countless colleges and universities tell us that the requests for deferrals are usually granted. Some schools give credit for service and academic programs, and even well-designed independent projects.

Colleges and employers look favorably on the Gap Year experience.  They know that it opens eyes and hearts and broadens perspective. They see the students return with a whole new way of seeing themselves and the world. Their college experience—and their lives—are richer and more meaningful.

Over the long haul, we hope to reach every school in the country. We plan to begin with schools that are already interested in the idea of experiential education across borders.  If you would like to talk to us, your e-mail will come directly to my personal inbox at info@letsgetglobal.org . I’m hoping we can add your school to our team and I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Respectfully,
Rita
